DESCRIPTION
Postcard of the removal of the Cooke Elm on West Street, located in Keene New Hampshire.
For many years, the "Cooke Elm" was allowed to stand in front of the Noah Cooke house and the road separated and passed on each side of the huge elm. It was ordered to be cut in 1901 in order to widen the street, but this was opposed by the Rural Improvement Society. It was finally cut down in May 1914 and the trunk was found to measure from 5.5 to 7 feet in diameter. It required the combined efforts of the steam roller and electric railway cars to haul it away.
